The marine industry is risky and a good SMS has a sound Risk Assessment register to manage these risks, to ensure we can all get home safely.
We've worked hard to make it easy for admins and crews to manage the risk aboard their assets
Risk Assessments:
The risk assessment feature is designed to capture the risks associated with vessel and the activities conducted on board.
EG. Boarding passengers, Working on deck in rough seas, Hazardous cargo etc.
Reporting new Hazards.
Crew who are assigned a role with the appropriate permissions can report new Hazards using the in-app Hazard/Defect log.
Admins can opt to receive notifications when these are logged.
It is a requirement in most jurisdictions to include Masters and Crew in the development and revisions of Risk Assessments.
From the assets home page, select the SMS tab, then "Risk Assessments".
Click "+ Add Content" at the bottom of the page.
You can choose to either:
Start a new Risk Assessment from scratch.
Use one of our helpers to get you started which you can then modify as required.
Choose from any Fleet risk assessments already completed in your fleet library. See Fleet Content for information on this.
Work through the pages to complete your risk assessment:
In the window that appears when you select Start a New Risk Assessment, select "Identify your own Hazard", or "Choose from our suggested hazards", to give your risk assessment a title. EG: Heavy objects on deck.
The next page is the "Risk/control pairs". There may be multiple risks associated with the hazard and each may have different controls. You can add as many pairs as you require. EG:
One risk may be that the objects could slide in rough seas and crush someone, and the control may be to lash all loose deck cargo, or stow below deck.
Another risk may be that the cargo could be lost overboard and a control could be to ensure no cargo is stacked above rail height.
Rate the risk. Choose the likelihood and consequence, or just select a risk score from the table:
Select who is responsible and include a photo if required, then save and finish.
WARNING: These are generic in nature and cannot cover all the nuances of your operation. We advise that you review the helper carefully and remember that you are responsible for the content of your SMS!
Select the helpers from the list of pre-populated risk assessments and click "Add Items"
Once the helper is in your list, click on each one and work through the steps above to ensure they are relevant to your operation.
Select from the list then click "Update".
These risk assessments will appear in under a separate heading.
Click on the Risk assessment tile and scroll to the bottom
Select the version you'd like to view. The version highlighted black is the current version.
